I am not ashamed to admit that I am an advocate of trashy reality TV and even some crappy pop music. I was devastated when Snooki couldn’t find her Crocodilly, delighted when Scott Disick got sober and added a walking stick to his fabulous fall wardrobe, and heartbroken when Bret Michaels chose the wrong girl on Rock of Love. (Everyone knows it should have been me.) I am all too happy to douse myself in glitter and attend a Ke$ha concert and fully adore any and all things Justin Bieber.  Judge me all you want.

However, with the onslaught of ridiculous celebrities who are famous just for being famous, many of us seem to forget that there are actually talented, working artists out there.

Some of these women will never get all the recognition they deserve because they’re too busy writing and creating their own music instead of trying to garner fame by using shock value tactics like riding around in a giant egg. (Yeah, I’m looking at you Gaga, you fucking moron.)

So, today I’m taking time out to pay my respects to the hard-working, talented women in the music industry who are doing it right and making it big the old-fashioned way. With music. These are, in my opinion, some of the best female rock stars of the moment.

Christina Perri

I can’t say enough about Christina Perri. There is not one chick on the planet who can’t relate to “Jar of Hearts.” I had the opportunity to see the soulful Christina do an extremely intimate (legit, like 10 people) acoustic performance and her voice really is that incredible. No autotune necessary. Oh, and she’s also hot as hell.

You should definitely know who Adele is since “Rolling in the Deep” has recently been put into heavy rotation on mainstream radio. Let’s get over the fact that Adele is not a stick figure. It’s irrelevant. If you want to talk about someone being “too big,” stick to Khloe Kardashian. That’s understandable because she has no talent to speak of so there really isn’t anything else to say about her. Adele, on the other hand, is all kinds of awesome and her talent speaks for itself.

Grace Potter

Grace Potter, of Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, with her sequins, and blunt blond bangs, and sultry gravely voice is literally the epitome of everything I have ever wanted to be. I don’t have anything else to say. She’s flawless.

Taylor Momsen

I was the first one to knock The Pretty Reckless. I just assumed that Taylor Momsen, aka “Little J” of Gossip Girl, could not be capable of putting out anything other than nonsensical crap. It’s a fair assumption…remember Leighton Meester’s brief foray into music? Fuckin brutal. But T-Moms totally kills it. Yes, she does go a little overboard with the whole rebellious, raccoon eyes, brooding teenager thing but you have to keep in mind that she IS a teenager and all teenage girls go through that stage. Besides, underneath all that eyeliner and angst is a fantastic little rock star and that’s all that really matters.

Allison Mosshart

Allison Mosshart is lead vocalist for both The Kills and The Dead Weather (for which she shares the stage with the lovely Jack White). Mosshart is creepy, sexy, intimidating and sensual all at the same time. You are confused and intrigued and just when you think you have her all figured out, she throws you through another loop…and I don’t know about you, but I love a bitch who can keep me on my toes.
